Active Recall
Pulling knowledge out beats pushing it back in.
What it is
Active recall means closing the book and pulling the answer out of your own head, instead of re-reading until it feels familiar. It takes effort, and that effort is the whole point.
Why it works
Every time you pull a fact back to mind, you make it easier to find next time. Researchers call this the testing effect. Re-reading feels productive because it feels smooth, but that smooth feeling is just recognition, not memory you can count on later.
Supporting research
In study after study, people who tested themselves once remembered far more a week later than people who re-read the same page several times. Once you have learned something, more re-reading barely helps, while testing yourself helps a lot. And it works across ages, subjects, and question types.
Flashcards and the Daily Challenge both make you retrieve, not re-read. You always answer before you see the solution, so the studying itself is the practice that makes it stick.
Spaced Repetition
Forgetting runs on a schedule. So we review on one.
The forgetting curve
Back in 1885, Hermann Ebbinghaus spent months testing his own memory day after day and drew the first forgetting curve. It drops fast at first, then levels off. Left alone, most of what you learn today is gone within days.
The spacing effect
Spreading your reviews out over time beats cramming them together. It is one of the most solid findings in all of memory research. The catch: the best gap keeps changing. It grows as the day you actually need to remember moves further off. That moving target is why the spacing should be worked out for you, not guessed.
FSRS, the modern scheduler
Modern schedulers track three things for every card: how hard it is, how firmly it is stuck in memory right now, and how likely you are to recall it today. From those, they pick the day a review will do the most good. FocusPace uses FSRS, an open-source scheduler trained on hundreds of millions of real reviews.
The FocusPace review engine
FocusPace runs that same FSRS scheduler right on your device. It works out the timing from the clock, so a review lands on the same day whether you are on your phone or your tablet. You never set a schedule. You just answer, and the timing takes care of itself.
After you rate a card, FocusPace re-checks how well you know it and sets the next review for just before you would forget: sooner for shaky cards, much later for solid ones.
Bloom's Taxonomy
Knowing the word isn't knowing the idea.
The six levels
In 1956 a group led by Benjamin Bloom sorted learning into levels, from simple recall at the bottom up to creating something new. A 2001 update rephrased them as verbs: remember, understand, apply, analyse, evaluate, create. That is the version most schools use today.
AI question difficulty
There is a real gap between reciting a definition and using the idea on a problem you have never seen. When FocusPace makes cards, it aims at a Bloom level, not just a topic, so each question sits at the depth you want. Deeper questions come back more often, because deeper understanding is harder to hold onto.
Learning objectives
A Bloom level also says what a card is for. With every card tagged, FocusPace can show you the shape of your practice: whether you are only memorising, or actually working up to applying and analysing.
Every card quietly carries a Bloom level, in every mode. It shapes how often the card comes back, and helps the app show you where your understanding is still thin.

Knowledge tracing
Knowledge tracing keeps a running estimate of how well you know each idea, and updates it after every answer. It started as a model built for computer tutors in 1994 and has been improved ever since.
Adaptive practice
Practice that adjusts to the person beats one-size-fits-all teaching, something measured in tutoring systems since the 1980s. The win comes from spending time where you are actually weak, instead of marching everyone through the same fixed order at the same pace.
Progress prediction
The same answer-by-answer record that sets your schedule also shows a direction. Turning it into a clear picture of where you are heading, while there is still time to change course, is the whole point.
Every card has its own ease value, and every answer nudges it. Miss a card and it comes right back, and its ease drops so it keeps returning more often. Get it easily and the ease rises and the card drifts further out. You set none of this: the schedule quietly reshapes itself around the cards you personally find hard.
Focus Sessions
Big tasks stall. Small blocks move.
Structured work intervals
A focus session is simple: pick one task, start a short timer, and work in a protected block until it rings. A block that small is hard to dread, so you actually start, and starting is most of the battle. The quiet matters too: every interruption drags you out of the work and costs far more than the few seconds it seems to.
Cognitive breaks
Attention runs down. Over a long, unbroken stretch your focus quietly slips. Researchers found that short, deliberate breaks, where you set the goal aside and pick it back up, keep attention sharp for the whole session. That is why a short break lands on its own before your focus starts to fray.
Attention research
Timed blocks and planned breaks work as a pair: the block keeps distractions out, and the break tops up the attention that carries you through. A pace you can keep beats one heroic all-nighter.
All of this becomes settings you never have to touch: a block short enough that starting feels easy, a break that lands before you fade, and a pace built to repeat tomorrow instead of burning out today.
